CHRISSIE HYNDE of the PRETENDERS was also absent, but had her friend, actress Rosanna Arquette, accept the best female rock guitarist award for her. Arquette noted that Hynde thought her award was a joke, until it was clarified to the expatriate American musician (a longtime U.K. resident) that her award was for best female guitarist, not best guitarist regardless of gender.

Reading from a statement by Hynde, Arquette quoted the head-Pretender as saying: "What a relief I don't have to go up against Steve Cropper and Jeff Beck. Allowing for my biological disadvantage was so kind. Thanks."
