The Pretenders arrived on stage, all donning Halloween masks. Chrissie Hynde balked the traditional colour scheme of the night by wearing all white, but her haunting voice was ever present, sending chills to all.
The play list was just great: everything you'd expect was played. Included were most tracks from their most recent album, as well as old favourites Brass In Pocket (I'm Special),and Back on the Chain Gang. The highlight of the night had to be the duet of Chrissie with Nash from Urge Overkill. They did a really bizarre Carpenters cover, and did quite an amazing job.
The band was simply stupendous. After barely surviving two putrid displays of talentless headliners at Molson Park this summer (Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden), it was refreshing to see a band that could actually play and a vocalist that could actually sing (what a concept).
The Pretenders' latest album is titled Last of the Independents, but Last of the Survivors would have been just as appropriate. Chrissie and the boys have survived a lot, and can still pull off an amazing concert. I guess truly great music by truly great musicians never goes out of style.
Paul's Concert Rating was *****
