'The Road Home'

Q: I heard, Ann, that your singing style was affected recently by a fax you were sent by Chrissie Hynde.

Ann: She faxed all the women in rock with this thing called "Chrissie Hynde's advice to chick rockers." And there were ten points, like "don't get involved with people in the band, it always leads to tears..." Just all these points of protocol for chicks in bands and it was mostly funny but some of them were strangely right-on. One of them was "Don't belt or screech. It sounds hysterical and no one wants to hear that shit." And it rang a bell in me and I thought, "God, I have been belting and screeching for 20 years." (laughs) So for "Love Hurts," that was a great chance to be languid and steady and emotional. We sent her back a fax that said, "Chrissie, thanks for the advice, we're eagerly awaiting your next fax that tells you what to do when you've already broken the ten commandments. We've already done everything on this page wrong! Now what do we do?
